What is true Pilates? How do you know if the Pilates you are receiving is truly Pilates? Here are a few clues:  If the instructor begins by clearly explaining the muscles of the core so you really understand what they are, really understand what they do and why they are important, that is the first step.  Next, the instructor builds on this knowledge, directing you through basic to more challenging exercises with special attention to form and breathing. This is true Pilates.

Each precise exercise starts with your mental focus and breathing so you create the communication to exact muscles, exact areas in your body. Breathing energizes the muscles and allows you to stay focused and in present time. Pilates is not ‘check-out’ time. It is fully ‘check-in’ time. It is exhilarating and empowering to focus completely, control your thinking, your motion, your body.
